Dear Parents,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to my fifth grade class. I am looking forward to a great year. I will do my best to make sure that your child has a successful year. I consider it an honor and a great blessing to have your child in my classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call me at school (423-733-2534) or at home (423-733-4554). In case of an emergency during the school day and you have trouble getting a call through to the school number, please call my cell number (423-312-0004 – this is long distance unless you have “area plus”).
I will do my best to keep you informed about your child’s progress and needs. I will be sending you a note if your child has any problems with assignments and /or behavior. It will be your child’s responsibility to get these notes home to you. Please sign these notes and return them to me so that I know you received the note and you are aware of your child’s needs. Notes not returned will result in a phone call to you (to prevent “disappearing” notes). We will be using planners this year. This planner will be your connection to our classroom assignments. It will be the responsibility of the student to (1) Copy the daily assignments each morning, (2) Get the teacher to check off finished assignments and sign {CDM} at the end of each day, teacher will not sign if any assignment is not completed (3) Get parent to sign each night. Planners will be checked on Tuesday mornings -if student has kept the week before up to date (all assignments listed and checked off, 5 teacher & 5 parent’s signatures or initials), student will receive a for the week. Six ’s = 100 grade for the 6 weeks to be put in all 6 subjects. Planners will be supplied by the teacher. Any assignment not checked has not been turned in. Assignments circled are past due and will get a “0” if not completed and turned in. Lost planners will result in paying for a 2nd one. Please inform me of anything that you feel might be affecting your child’s performance or progress.
Your child will have the opportunity to earn a grade of 100 to put in the subject of their choice by keeping their Daily Personal Journal up to date. Journals will be graded at the end of each 6 weeks. Journals having all titles, page #’s and 10-12 lines written on each will receive a 100. There will be other opportunities to earn free 100’s arise throughout the year for participation in 4-H events, etc.
I do not give any homework on weekends. I will not schedule any tests on Mondays. There will be a Reading comprehension test on Tuesdays and a Spelling test on Fridays. Your child should not have excessive homework if he/she uses class time wisely. Unfinished weekly assignments will result in weekend homework.
I believe that together (Parent + Student + Teacher) we can reach our goal. The goal being, to insure that your child successfully completes fifth grade and is well prepared to enter the sixth grade next year. Please join me and pray for a safe and successful year for all our students and their families. May God bless you and your family.

Thank you,

Mrs. Crystal D. McCoy, 5th Grade
